It features an aluminum alloy block with cast iron cylinder liners, bore and stroke of 90.0 mm × 98.0 mm, a geometrical compression ratio of 12.5:1, and employs Dual VVT-i on the intake cam to enhance fuel efficiency in part-load operation.

Rated at about 154 hp (~114-kW) at 5,700 rpm and producing 187 Nm of torque at 4,400 rpm, it meets Euro 5 emissions in many applications. The engine now uses a port (distributed) fuel injection system, 4 valves per cylinder, and is designed to work with hybrid assistance (battery + electric motor) in models such as the Camry Hybrid, RAV4 Hybrid, Harrier, and Lexus hybrids.
