Description

VOLVO V50 D4204T 2.0L 16V Common Rail Inline-4 Turbo Diesel Engine

Power Unit Designed high-performance  Power plant, Used engine For Sale

The VOLVO V50 D4204T 2.0D Turbo Engine is a powerful, efficient and widely compatible replacement diesel power unit ideal for a range of Volvo models and select European vehicles.

VOLVO V50 D4204T 2.0D Turbo Engine

Designed as part of Volvo’s Drive-E family of 2.0 L diesel engines, the D4204T features an inline-4 layout with 16 valves, a robust common rail fuel system and turbocharging for responsive performance and strong torque delivery. These engines were factory fitted in many Volvo applications from the mid-2000s through later model years, making them sought after for both replacement and upgrade projects.

This 2.0L turbo diesel typically delivers around 136 hp (100 kW) and 320 Nm of torque in its more common early variants, with later variants (such as D4204T4 and D4204T14) producing up to 150–190 hp and torque figures exceeding 350–400 Nm depending on tuning and turbo configuration. It features a durable DOHC design, direct common rail injection for improved fuel atomization and economy, and is robustly engineered for Euro emission standards.

Oil capacity is typically around 5.2–5.5 L, and the engine is designed for front-engine installations with both manual and automatic transmissions compatible.

Compatible vehicles include a solid lineup of Volvo sedans, wagons and hatchbacks such as the V50, C30, S40, V70, and many Drive-E era models like the S60, V60, XC60, XC90, S90 and V90 when fitted with 2.0 L diesel configurations. The engine’s versatility also sees it used across model generations as manufacturers sought efficient yet capable diesel options.

Specifications, Common weaknesses and Maintenance.

While generally reliable, common weaknesses for the D4204T family include oil leaks around the valve cover and seals, DPF (diesel particulate filter) clogging if subjected only to short trips, and occasional turbocharger wear that can affect boost performance.

Early versions of this engine have also been associated with higher oil consumption, often linked to piston ring and EGR cooler design issues, especially on D4 versions; later production engines saw design refinements to mitigate these concerns.

Maintenance notes stress regular timing belt replacement before 120,000 km to avoid catastrophic valve damage, routine DPF regeneration drives, fuel filter maintenance to prevent water-induced issues, and frequent oil and filter changes using manufacturer-approved diesel engine oil. Proper servicing preserves both performance and long-term durability, making the VOLVO V50 D4204T 2.0D Turbo Engine a robust choice for both daily drivers and project vehicles.
