The Toyota 4U-GSE 2.0L engine, found in the 2017–2020 Toyota GT86, is a high-revving, naturally aspirated flat-four boxer engine developed in collaboration with Subaru. Displacing 1,998 cc, this horizontally opposed 4-cylinder powerplant delivers an exhilarating blend of balance, power, and precision.

Equipped with DOHC (Dual Overhead Camshafts), 16 valves, and Toyota’s D-4S dual fuel injection system—combining both port and direct injection—it offers improved throttle response and combustion efficiency.

Producing approximately 200 horsepower (147 kW) at 7,000 rpm and 205 Nm of torque at 6,400–6,600 rpm, the 4U-GSE delivers engaging performance paired with Toyota’s 6-speed close-ratio manual transmission for a pure driving experience.

Built with an aluminum block and heads, the engine is lightweight and mounted low for an optimal rear-wheel-drive balance, contributing to the GT86’s iconic handling dynamics.

It features a 12.5:1 compression ratio, 86 mm bore and stroke, and uses premium 95 RON unleaded petrol. Recommended oil capacity is 5.4 litres (SAE 0W-20), with a water-cooled system ensuring stable performance under spirited driving.
